Statement
Oil on canvas 1960s Valda taught art in what were then termed inner city schools in New York during the 1960s and 1970s. She was also involved in the Civil Rights movement going back to the 1940s when she was a students at the University of Chattanooga.
In this picture, she attempted to capture both the weariness and hope of that struggle in the late 1960s. |
The Beatles

Valda enjoyed the music and thoughts of The Beatles. By chance, she encountered them at their hotel in New York City just before their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show and later at the Abbey Road recording studio.
She also attended a solo concert by George Harrison. |
