Art by Valda

FACES
1960s - 1990s

While starting in the 1960s, Valda explored a number of other directions including Matisse-inspired work, geometric abstraction and her own style that mixed abstraction and figurative art, she continued to do some traditional portraits.  Still, even within this framework, her style continued to evolve.

Valda taught art in what were then termed inner city schools in New York during the 1960s and 1970s.  She was also involved in the Civil Rights movement going back to the 1940s when she was a students at the University of Chattanooga.

In this picture, she attempted to capture both the weariness and hope of that struggle in the late 1960s.

Valda enjoyed the music and thoughts of The Beatles.  By chance, she encountered them at their hotel in New York City just before their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show and later at the Abbey Road recording studio.

She also attended a solo concert by George Harrison.
