The Art of Norwegian GetawayAs with all of the mega-size ships in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet, the single most important work of art in Norwegian Getaway's collection is on the exterior of the ship. It is a mural created by David Le Batard, known as Lebo.
Born in New York City in 1972 to a Cuban imigrant family, Lebo grew up in South Florida where he has become a well-known artist. His works reflect elements of his Cuban-American heritage, music, South Florida street art and American cartoon art. (See our interview with Lebo). For Norwegian Getaway, Lebo depicted a mermaid swimming in a pastel blue sea that curves upward in a multi-colored wave. Overhead is a bright orange sunlit sky. Further aft, a flight of smiling pelicans are meant to symbolize good fortune. Inside, leaving aside the art gallery operated by the concessionaire Park West, the ship has relatively little art. In the staircases, in the passenger corridors and in the cabins are photographs. They show flowers or pleasant scenes and obviously were meant to provide decoration rather than an art experience. Still, you do occasionally do come across paintings or sculpture. In the Taste and Savor dining rooms are a series of abstract paintings by an unidentified artist. Along the same lines, there is a modern sculpture in the atrium beneath the stairs. Again, it is by an unidentified artist. A number of ideas were carried forward from earlier ships. For example, as on every Norwegian ship since Norwegian Epic, there is a large glass chandelier in the atrium, which changes color as the day progresses. Also, as on Norwegian Breakaway, there is an installation using butterflies to create a design and there is an Asian-inspired painting of fish not far from th sushi bar. It should be pointed out that these are not copies of the works on Breakaway but rather unique works that appear to have been done by the same artists. For more about Norwegian Getaway
