HUDSON RIVER MUSEUM

Located just north of New York City in suburban Yonker, New York, the Hudson River Museum (HRM) sits in a green park overlooking the Hudson River. The Palisades across the river provide a gorgeous view on a summers day.

The museum campus includes modern concrete Brutalist-style buildings from the 1960s as well as Glenview, a Victorian mansion built in 1877 as the home of financier John Bond Trevor. (The mansion has been restored to its Gilded Age glory and is open to the public). Despite the difference in age, the buildings harmonize into an attractive whole.

Founded in 1919 as the Museum of Yonkers, the museum moved to Glenview in 1924. By the 1940s, it was already being called the Hudson River Museum.

As one might expect from the name, the museum has a strong collection of art works by the Hudson River School artists including Albert Bierstadt and Jasper Francis Cropsey, whose studio is nearby. However, HRM also has an eclectic collection of more recent works. A highlight is a seascape by American Impressionist Childe Hassam. Other impressive works include art by Remington, Matisse, Warhol, and Segal.

A crowd pleaser is Red Grooms' “Bookstore,” a life-size, three-dimensional pictorama of a New York City bookstore. Viewers can enter and be surrounded by the art.

We found the collection's works by other lesser-known artists interesting and worthwhile. Visiting exhibitions by contempoary artists are also presented.

While HRM has a substantial art collection, it is not exclusively an art museum. Indeed, it was originally founded as a science museum. Today, the museum also includes a planetarium and an amphitheater where cultural events are held.

For more information on visiting, see the HRM website.
