Moco Museum Barcelona

The Moco Museum in Barcelona (“Moco Barcelona”) presents modern and contemporary art. “Moco celebrates those who dare to shift perspectives and inspire collective change.” It sees itself as: “Redefining what museums in Barcelona can be, Moco Museum brings art to life.”

In 2016, the Moco Museum opened in Amsterdam as an independent, privately-funded museum. Following the success of that venue, Moco opened its Barcelona location in 2021. Again, it was a success and Moco London opened in 2024.

Moco Barcelona is housed in the Palu Cervello, a 16th century palace. It is on the same street as Barcelona's Picasso Museum in the historic El Born section of the city.

The art displayed in Moco Barcelona is in striking contrast to its historical building. While the building oozes history and tradition, the art works speak of the moment and in some cases, the future. Along the same lines, although Moco prides itself on the rebellious nature of its art, the works are presented in a clean, polished gallery setting that would be the envy of the contemporary art establishment.

Even though Moco Barcelona lives in a palace, it is not a large building. In fact, the museum tells visitors that an hour is all that need be allocated to it. This reflects the fact that Moco Barcelona is often an introduction to modern and contemporary art for its visitors. It does not deluge visitors with a flood of works by an army of artists. Rather, it presents a limited number of works by recognized masters and occasionally, rising stars. Given the quality of the art and its presentation, a visit is an enjoyable experience, not only for novices, but also for those familiar with modern and contemporary art.

Moco distributes its collection among its three locations on a rotating basis. Thus, a particular work seen in Barcelona may subsequently be seen in London or Amsterdam. Works from the Moco Collection are supplemented by works on temporary loan. Among the artists who have been shown at Moco Barcelona are Dali, Warhol, Banksy, and Koons. The museum presents digital and immersive works as well as traditional two and three dimensional works.
