Directly across the street from the Marble Arch is the London location of the Moco Museum. It opened in 2024 following in the footsteps of Moco Museums in Amsterdam and Barcelona.
The name “Moco” is a combination of the first two letters of the terms “Modern” and “Contemporary” – an indication of what this privately-funded museum is all about. “Moco presents modern, contemporary, digital and immersive art, alongside street art and immersive experiences by globally recognised artists . . . Across all locations, Moco Museum focuses on art that speaks to the present, engaging with themes of identity, society, humour, rebellion, and emotion. Moco’s vision is to challenge elitism in the art world and create an accessible, inclusive museum experience where art feels human, relevant, and emotionally engaging.” Moco is not an encyclopedic museum of modern and contemporary art. Rather, it is more of a “best of” collection of works by established masters of these fields. As a result, it is particularly useful for those who are seeking an introduction to what can be perplexing areas of art. Included in the collection are works by artists such as Banksy, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, KAWS, Jeff Koons, Julian Opie and Andy Warhol to name a few. There are exhibitions drawn from the Moco permanent collection as well as temporary exhibitions. The three floors of exhibition area in London are spacious and remarkably clean. Indeed, they have something of the look of a commercial gallery rather than a traditional museum. However, the atmosphere is not intimidating. The works are easily accessible with good signage talking about the works and/or the artist. In addition to paintings and three-dimensional works, there are immersive rooms and digital displays. For more information about visiting the London location, see the Moco Museum's website. |
