Preliminary sketches - - It is was impractical to try and paint in the theater but I was able to do some sketches. However, the dancers moved so quickly that it was really only possible to try and make a quick sketch of a position or to sketch a movement that had been captured in my memory.

Later, I created these paintings based upon my sketches and the images that I had retained in my mind. Often, I combined images and altered costumes as well as the dancers to fit with my artistic vision. What I was trying to do was evoke the atmosphere of what I had seen rather than make a journalistic depiction of any dance or person.
These works were done in watercolors. Some also have graphite and/or colored pencil.
Left: Stark contrasts.
